Cultural Diversity
Consisting of staff and students from over 40 countries, St Andrew’s College and its Library recognise the rich cultural diversity they bring to the school.
The Library is committed to providing resources which recognises this diversity, promotes equality and human rights and challenges discrimination.
Resources
Material is purchased for the Library that contributes to a multicultural and pluralist world view. Items are selected to be free of gender, race, religious, political and disability bias.
Books
Fiction
Fiction is available in the following languages - English, Irish, French, Spanish, German and Italian.
Fiction by non-Irish authors and fiction set in foreign locations is regularly purchased
Non-fiction
To facilitate a multicultural and pluralist world view non-fiction material is purchased, or is available via weblinks on the catalogue, for the following topic areas:
- Asylum Seekers
- Censorship
- Conflict and Conflict Resolution
- Discrimination
- Equality
- Human Rights
- Immigrants and Immigration
- International Rights Organisations such as the European Union, the United Nations and Amnesty International
- Minority and Ethnic Groups such as Travellers
- Racism
- Religious Diversity
Grammar and verb books for the above languages plus Dutch and Finnish
Classic literature in the original language
Myths and legends from various cultures
Magazines
The Library subscribes to a wide range of journals. Title details can be found on the 'General Information' page.
World Book Online Encyclopedia
The leading secondary school encyclopedia is available at www.scoilnet.ie. Use the cog symbol (Tools and Settings) on an entry to find the Translate button. Click on this and then click on 'Select a Language'. A drop-down list containing an A-Z selection appears. Select the language of your choice.
