Leinster Senior Schoolgirls' Hockey Final
Loreto Foxrock 1 : St Andrew's 0
The Senior Schoolgirls' Leinster Cup Fnal on Thursday 8 March was our first since 2014. The team had come a long way since pre-season and, due to excellent performances in the earlier rounds, found themselves lining out against Loreto Foxrock in UCD in the final on Thursday 8 March. The first half started tentatively as both sides felt their way into the game. St Andrew's had the majority of possession in the first twenty minutes but were caught off guard as Foxrock broke up the pitch with fine examples of skill andspeed and slotted a superb goal against the run of play. The goal took the wind from our sails but we weathered the storm until half time.
The second half was a different game. We started very strongly and within ten minutes had a disallowed goal - a quick free taken by Gaby Lewis outside the circle leading to a rocket of a shot that hit the back board but it was deemed not to have gone the required five yards. The St Andrew's support was superb. The sea of blue and the constant chanting gave our girls an added surge. We kept pushing forward putting pressure on the Foxrock defence and some excellent skill by our forwards led to our first short corner. Kate Orr's poweful drag flick was stopped on the line by a defender's body resulting in a penalty stroke. Kate's effort hit the post and depsite the relentless drives forward from Katie Jane Marshall and Amy Elliot the score remained 1-0 until the end. The girls gave their all but on the day it just wasn't enough. We are very proud of the team and their coaches for taking us all the way to the final.
