Hockey

Hockey has steadily grown as a sport in St Andrew’s College from humble beginnings. It was introduced as a sport for girls in the 1970s with the school becoming co-educational for the first time. In the 1980s it was offered to boys and from there it has grown to a level where we are now classed as one of the premier hockey schools in the country.

Through the 1980s and 1990s the game progressed and in the mid 1990s real signs of progress were evident with our first pieces of silverware coming through the door. The major turning point for the game came with the laying of two synthetic pitches on the school campus at the turn of the century. This development made the game more visible to the student population and as a result numbers playing the sport doubled in the space of two years.

In St Andrew’s College we aim to provide playing opportunities for all students regardless of ability. We field 28 teams between the boys and girls in the Leinster Leagues which allows opportunities for all students to play and represent the school. We have a highly dedicated and skilled coaching team, many of whom have played the game at the highest level.

Over the last eighteen years our Boys' and Girls' sides have enjoyed huge success both at provincial and national level.  Our Boys' Senior 1st XI won their seventh national title in October 2017, their fifth in the last six years.  Our Senior Girls' 1st XI also enjoyed success at national level in 2010 winning the Kate Russell, a year in which we were named IHA Hockey School of the Year.

We have, over the years, supplied many players to Irish underage and senior squads with a number of our past pupils enjoying periods on the continent playing the game professionally and travelling the world with the national squad. We are hugely proud of their achievements and the contribution that all our past and current students have made to the success of hockey in St Andrew’s College.
